SEO VS SEM OR PPC Difference || Ranker Monkey




Today, I want to talk to you about SEO vs SEM. They are two similar things with a few differences, I see them being used interchangeably a lot online and there are some major different similarities. There's a lot of crossover between the two but there are also a few differences. So, I just wanted to break it down and make sure that we're all clear on what it is we're talking about here.

SEO || What is SEO:

So first and foremost SEO stands for search engine optimization. So while we are at it would you please stop saying SEO optimization, because i see that a lot online and it drives me nuts. It's like an ATM machine doesn't do it. It's redundant to just say SEO. Because that's what the O stands for is optimization. 

So SEO is when you are getting your website to organically rank for a certain keyword. Right it shows up because it is the best content with that particular keyword it's what people are looking for there are a lot of aspects of SEO I've gone over a lot of them on this blog before as well as on my blog we'll go over some of the basics in a few minutes.


What is SEM || What is PPC:

Search engine marketing || Pay Per Click:

SEM is search engine marketing so this includes SEO but it also includes PPC also known as pay-per-click advertising. If you're unfamiliar with PPC it's called that because you pay for the click you don't pay to rank on the first page of google for a certain amount of time. You don't pay for the views you only pay when someone clicks through to your website.

So what makes S, SEM real quick is yeah i said that already SEO is or SEM is SEO plus the PPC so you can think of it as like SEM is overall search and you know online marketing and then SEO is part of SEM. 

So that's what we're talking about when we talk about SEO vs SEM. So what does SEO include there's on-page SEO real quick on page SEO is everything on your website everything that you can control that helps your website rank for certain keywords. Off-page SEO is what other people are saying about you online. 

Obviously backlinks are really big. So, if other websites are linking back to your website that will impact your SEO even if they're just talking about you even if they're not including a backlink just your brand mentioning your company name getting mentioned on their website also improves your SEO or downgrades.

Your SEO depends on the website right so that's another thing to keep in mind as well as social media. What are people saying about you online are you using social media to get backlinks to your website to naturally drive organic traffic back to your website. That can also impact your SEO. So that's kind of the quick breakdown of on page VS off page SEO, technical SEO.

I don't like to get too technical usually here just because I want to make sure that I'm breaking it down for people by making it as accessible as possible for people who are not as familiar and categorize all of your content or all the content you want categorized. Making sure there's no keyword cannabis cannibalization or repeat content all of that is under the umbrella of SEO user experience.

Google wants to make sure users have a good user experience. Anytime they click through to something Google's trying to get them the best content and the best user experience. So if that's on your website great if it's not on your website, if you have a high bounce rate that can actually uh have an impact on your SEO. So um there's going to be a certain amount of bounce anyway from your website just because that's the natural order of things people click on a website it's not for them they click back.

But if your bounce rate is too high. It can look like it's not great content like the website is not easy to navigate. Maybe it doesn't load quickly there are all sorts of factors that can impact a that can create a poor user experience and google will downgrade your search rankings as a result. So make sure that you have optimized your user experience. There is now a whole section in google analytics to keep track of that so absolutely take advantage of that opportunity. 


SEM || Search Engine Marketing:

Now, search engine marketing. so as we discussed right it's pay-per-click plus all of the things discussed above it is a bidding system. So there is no flat rate for PPC advertising you're never going to pay for a certain keyword, you're never going to pay a certain amount, you're going to pay whatever you think. You should be paying right but then you can look at what up where other people are ranking.

So if you let's say you bid five dollars to rank for a keyword and another website bid three dollars and another website bid a dollar fifty. So, you bit the highest so you'd be at the top and then the three dollar website that would be below you and then at the bottom. Above the organic rankings would be the website that bid 150. so it's still above the organic rankings. It's still hanging out with you guys but it's not at the very top of Google's page.

So, bid what you want, write what you think is fair . If you use a keyword research tool which you absolutely should be using, it will tell you what the PPC is for each keyword, the normal cost per click or the average cost per click. So, maybe you want to bid a little bit higher than that just to make sure that you're getting at the top of that keyword. At the top of the page you can also check out what other people are ranking for right. So you can google that keyword to see where you're ranking  at the top or is there another website above you or are there two websites above you that indicates that they bid higher than you did so maybe you have to up your game. 

If you really want to be at the top, maybe being at the tippy top is not ideal for you. Maybe you want to bid a little bit lower and just really optimize your headline and your ad copy and and take that slightly lower ranking because you're only one or two down from the top. What does it matter so quality score now you have to make sure that your ad copy is on point and you're getting those clicks. 

If people are seeing your web ad and they're not clicking through Google is going to take note of that. So that can impact your quality score. You want to make sure that your ad copy is super on point so that you can get those clicks. That means it has to be relevant to the keyword and it has to have an emotional component that compels them to click through and then the content they find when they get to your website.

That has to be really important right that has to be on point as well has to be easy to navigate and compel them to take the next step in the buyer journey whatever that is so that will impact your quality score google likes that and it will actually help you convert those leads into customers. Which is the whole reason you're doing this in the first place. Make sure your content is on point you can constantly you can do some a b testing with your ad to see which one gets the best results and you can do some a b testing with your content too again see which one converts the most leads versus which one doesn't have the best results and then you can keep tweaking like that.

SEO VS SMM || Search  engine optimization VS Search engine Marketing:


So you're really getting the best out of your ad. Because it is an advertisement you are paying for this you want to make sure you're getting the most out of it and like i said content is key. So, make sure that your ad copy is on point and if you do have a high click-through rate, if a lot of people who see your ad are clicking on it  and they're sticking around on your website, they're not bouncing back, which indicates a high quality score.

So you can actually get a discount on each click if you have a high quality score. So that's another reason to keep your content on point so the biggest difference between SEO and SEM is how quickly you will see results. I've said it again and again and I will continue saying it is a long game. It is not a get rich quick scheme, it is something that takes Google at least two to three months just to index and categorize your content much less figure out where to rank it and that's not including the time.

It takes to build trust with google and get google to believe that you really are the an expert in your industry and that they should rank your content in order to do that you have to consistently publish new content keep updating and optimizing your website along the way get those juicy backlinks right in order to earn Google's trust. It is a long game. It is a lot of work but it does pay off right with PPC you can start ranking right away on the first page of google.

as soon as you start paying the downside is that you will then as soon as you stop paying you are no longer on the first page of google unless you can organically rank for it. I have seen websites where I'll search something and the same website shows up in advertising and inorganic one person complained that their organic ranking disappeared. When they paid to rank for that keyword and then as soon as they stopped paying for the ad their organic ranking came back. That was weird google has said that should not happen but keep an eye out for that just in case something weird is going on with your website and with your search rankings.
